A tribute to former MK Chair Loveday Carlyon

Everyone at Mebyon Kernow is extremely saddened that MK’s eighth leader, Loveday Carlyon, recently passed away.
Loveday was MK’s chair between 1986 and 1989. A formidable campaigner, she promoted a series of high profile media campaigns. This included criticism of mass tourism and she helped MK force a public inquiry seeking a Cornwall-only constituency for the European Parliament in 1988. She was also prominent in opposition to the over-development of Cornwall – she was secretary of Cornish Alternatives to the Structure Plan – and successfully opposed attempts by the Department of Transport to remove the Cornish language from road signs at Liskeard.
She also served on Liskeard Town Council and more recently was a member of St Keyne Parish Council
Loveday was married to Julyan Holmes, a Cornish language activist and MK member, who himself died in 2024.
A number of MK members attended her funeral on 2nd January and, at this time, our thoughts are with Loveday’s children Kerenza and Tamsyn, and her grandchildren Tai, Olivia, Isla and Merryn.
A fuller tribute will appear in the next edition of Cornish Nation magazine [no 99].
